At Coronado National Memorial, the exploration of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in 1540 is memorialized as a journey that helped put much of the lands nearby on the map. Made in search of the fabled Seven Cities of Gold, the trek never found quite what it was looking for, but the expedition had significant impact on the civilizations that inhabited the area, and this memorial stands as a tribute to these as well as to the Spanish trip. Hiking trails now wind throughout the memorial lands, and one of the best places to visit is Coronado Cave, which features interesting rock formations. The park is on the very southern edge of Arizona where it meets Mexico, about 90 miles by car from Tucson.
Open daily dawn - dusk. Visitors center open 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Free.
